Land Rolling in FS25: What it is, why need it and how to do it?
Rolling the soil in Farming Simulator 25 increases your field's yield. Therefore, it is important to know all the subtleties and nuances about it in order to maximize the results of cultivation!
The rolling process is simple but crucial. Knowing all the details and nuances is important to achieve maximum results from soil preparation!
What Is Soil Rolling, and Why Do It?
Soil rolling is the process of compacting the soil by pressing it with a specialized agricultural tool—a roller.
By rolling the soil, you enhance its quality, improving aeration and providing plants with more oxygen. Additionally, this process buries pesky stones back into the ground, positively impacting your harvest.
Here’s what you gain by rolling the soil:
-
A 2.5% yield increase;
-
Stone burial, eliminating the need to purchase a stone-picking tool and manually remove stones.
However, stones will eventually resurface over time.
It’s important to note that rolling won’t provide a massive boost to your yield. The maximum increase is just 2.5%. So you have to decide for yourself whether it is worth it. After all, you should also take into account that in addition to the special equipment you will need to perform such a task, you will also have fuel costs. Although these costs are minor, they should still be considered.
Important: You must roll the soil immediately after sowing a crop. Rolling before sowing is pointless, and once the crop has entered at least one growth stage, the opportunity for rolling is lost.
Rolling is entirely optional. You can skip it, and your crops will still grow and mature normally. However, skipping this step comes with a -2.5% yield penalty. While this may not seem like much, for large fields, the loss in yield—and income—can become significant.
If you decide the small yield increase is worthwhile, let’s move on to selecting the right equipment.
Required Equipment
Technologically speaking, soil rolling is a simple process. All you need is a tractor and a roller.
If you already own a tractor, choose a roller based on its power. A weak tractor won’t be able to pull a large roller. For this reason, it’s recommended to purchase the roller first and then choose a compatible tractor.
In any case, the tractor you buy will serve you well for other tasks on the farm.
Once you have a tractor, you’ll just need to purchase a roller. Look for rollers in the in-game shop under the category "Yield Improvements" → "Rollers." The selection of rollers in the base game isn’t very large, so feel free to visit our FS25 mods section to find roller modifications.
For example, you can buy the Brandt LandRoller 591A. After purchasing, all equipment appears near the store. Drive your tractor to the store location, which is marked on the map.
If you bought both a tractor and a roller, you can use the fast-travel option in the game menu. Simply press Esc, locate the store icon, click on it, and fast-travel there by pressing Enter.
Now that you have your roller, it’s time to attach it to the tractor.
1. Reverse your tractor toward the roller’s hitch until you see a prompt to press Q to attach the equipment.
2. Once attached, you’re ready to start rolling your fields!
That’s it! You now have everything you need to roll the soil and improve your field’s yield.
When to Roll a Field?
As mentioned earlier, fields need to be rolled at the right time. Otherwise, the action will be meaningless. The ideal time for this is immediately after planting seeds. This way, you level and compact the soil and roll the stones back into the ground, eliminating the need to collect them separately.
It is important to note that rolling should not be done before planting. During planting, the soil will return to its original state, and your work will be wasted.
Rolling also cannot be done after the crop has started to grow. In this case, you would simply run the roller over the emerging plants and ruin them.
Roll the field immediately after planting! Only then will it have an effect.
How to Roll a Field in Farming Simulator 25
Now we’ve reached the most interesting and important point—the rolling process. In reality, it is very simple.
Head to the field where seeds have just been planted. The land must belong to you!
After that, position yourself at the very edge of the field so the roller covers the edge, and you won’t have to go over the edges twice for repeated rolling.
All you need to do is activate the tool. Just press the X key on your keyboard if you’re playing on PC to unfold the roller. On consoles, it will be a different button, but you can always check the game settings to find all hotkeys and see which button is assigned to each action.
Now, back to rolling. Great! All the equipment is ready to work, and we’re properly positioned at the start of the field. Begin moving forward. The roller will work automatically, compacting the soil and even rolling over the tracks left by the tractor.
Once you’ve completed one pass, turn around carefully and repeat the process in the opposite direction. Continue doing this until the entire field has been processed.
Using GPS or AI Workers for Rolling
Don’t feel like doing this routine fieldwork process yourself? Of course! Why would you, when Farming Simulator 25 offers excellent GPS and AI worker features? Assign the task to them.
Drive up to the field that needs rolling. Then press and hold the H key on the keyboard (again, on PS5 or Xbox, it will be a different button. You’ll see which button to press in the top-left corner. If the prompt isn’t visible, you need to enable it).
Pressing this button will open the game’s fieldwork automation menu. You need to:
• Select the soil preparation method;
• Apply the changes by pressing OK;
• Press H again to start the work.
We won’t go into detail here about how to set up and use AI workers or the Steering Assist system because our website has a full guide dedicated to this—Setting Up AI Workers and GPS. You can read it to learn everything about configuring the automation system. The setup is the same for all soil preparation types.
We’ll leave it here. We hope this information was useful to you!
